Michael Banowetz was a farmer and a blacksmith. His son, John, came to the United States and settled in Dubuque, Iowa with other people from the Gottscheer area of Austria. John came to America in 1866. He was born in May of 1847 and according to Frances Banowetz Harding, we believe he came here at the age of 18 to escape the mandatory service, which many Austrian's did at that time. We believe that John Banowetz moved to the Catholic settlement in Browns, Iowa around 1871, at which time he sent for his parents, Michael and Gertrude Stonitsch Banowetz and his younger brother, Mathias. The family arrived in Browns (Sugar Creek) Iowa by train. The first train to come through Browns was in 1871.
